7/19/2009 The Ten Commandments 9 - A Convenient Sin:  DO NOT LIE

Sermon Scripture References:
    The 9th Commandment: Deuteronomy 5:20

Key Old Testament Scripture: PROVERBS 6:16-23
Key New Testament Scripture:  Colossians 3:8-10

POSSIBLE QUESTIONS:  (Not in any particular order !  Choose and Arrange to make a flow that makes sense to you!)
1.  Was there anything in our time together this Sunday - a song we sang, a point from the sermon, a prayer, a station activity - that really stuck out to you?  If so, why?

2. What situations are the ones where it is most tempting for you to bend the truth ?

3.  William Barclay said that the root sources of lies include

Malice
Gossip
Fear
Convenience
Boasting
Profit

Which of these types of dishonesty in other people bothers you the most ?

4.  Why would God have such a strong opinion about deception in Proverbs 6:16-23

5.  The sermon mentioned 4 steps towards not bearing false witness:

  1. q    Before I even open my mouth to say anything: Is my motive right ?
(not Malice, Gossip, Fear, Profit, Boasting)

  2. q    Speak the Truth in Love  - frame what you say in winsome but honest words

  3. q    Let your words be few  - the more we blab the more apt we are to sin!

  4. q    Find a Christian fellowship     where you can be real  - a healthy small group interaction can spill over into the rest of your life

Which of these four steps is hardest for you ?  Why?

    6.  Read Colossians 3:8-10.   What is one step you could take in your everyday life to honor this scripture ?

    7.  The opposite of a false witness  is a true witness.   Mediate on  1 John 4:14.   What is at stake in this verse ?   At the point that you are at in your own spiritual journey - do you find the witness of the New Testament a trustworthy witness to you?
