This page includes key slides from the sermon, a link to the sermon podcast, and a large range of questions you can pick from for your small group.

Sermon Scripture References:
Philippians 4:4-7

Listen to the sermon

Summary:

In this beloved section of scripture Paul commands the people to rejoice and commands them not to be anxious.  How can you possibly control whether you feel anxious? Paul begins to lay out a life style here that will continue into our next sermon - a life style where God and not our anxiety rules as Lord. In these 7 short verses he teaches like a good coach the moves needed to live out and experience what we believe. He tells us what to remember about God, how to treat other people, and how to view our trials. It turns out they are all connected.

QUESTIONS

1.    In verses 4:4-7,  Paul gives a few do's for Christians and one big don't!  What does Paul call followers of Christ to do, and why is each of them so important for a healthy spiritual life ?

2.    Why do you think Paul makes such a big deal about anxiousness ?

3.    We have financial, medical, educational advantages that previous generations never imagined.  Then why do so many people and so many Christians lack real peace ?

4.    Two leading women at the Church of Philippi were obviously involved in some kind of conflict.  Why are disagreements so stressful and draining  ?

5.    In verse 4:2, does "agreeing in the Lord" mean that we must come to the same opinions ?  If so, why?  If not, what does it mean ?

6.    An unnamed person in verse 3 was urged by Paul to help mediate the dispute between Euodia and Synteche.  How skilled are you at helping resolve conflicts ?

7.    What stresses you more - being in conflict or having to referee a conflict between others ?

8.    When  does a spirit of gentleness help defuse tension ?

9.    Can you give an example from your own experience when strict justice demanded that you treat someone one way, but gentleness demanded that you respond differently ?

10.    In what ways could a person's belief in the imminent return of the Lord help bring them peace ?

11.    What is one situation in your life that is causing anxiety and tension?

12.    How can our small group members support you as you seek peace in this situation ?
